A white shirt is the classic case where the wrong bra shows. The fix is counterintuitive: the best bra under white is not white.
Match your skin, not your shirt
Thin white fabric lets light pass through. What shows is contrast. Your skin is darker than the shirt, so a white bra stands out against your skin as a bright outline. A bra close to your own skin tone has nothing to contrast with, and disappears.
- Light skin: cream, soft pink or light beige.
- Medium skin: beige, caramel or tan.
- Deep skin: brown, mocha or espresso.
Between two shades, choose the slightly darker one. Lighter shades show up more under white in daylight than darker ones.
Smooth beats pretty
Color is only half of it. Texture shows through thin fabric before color does, because lace, embroidery and raised seams cast small shadows.
- Molded or foam cups give a smooth line and stop nipple show-through.
- Laser-cut or bonded edges leave no ridge where the cup or band ends.
- No lace, no bows, no visible hooks at the front.
Save lace bras for tops that are opaque, or for when you want the bra to show.
Fit matters more under white
A white shirt shows fit problems that a darker top hides.
- Cup spill creates a ridge across the top of the cup. Try a cup up on the same band.
- Gaping cups leave a hollow that shows as a shadow. The shape is wrong for your breast shape. See breast shape types.
- A band that rides up pulls the back into a curve that shows through the shirt. Go down a band.
- Straps that dig in create bulges at the back. This is a band problem too.
The four-point fit check catches all of these in a minute.
Sheer blouses and white tops in sunlight
- For see-through blouses, add a smooth, fitted camisole or tank in your skin tone over the bra. It hides the bra and its lines.
- Sunlight shows more than office light. Check the outfit by a window before you leave.
- Under a white T-shirt, the same rules apply. A seamless T-shirt bra in your skin tone is the everyday answer.
Keep them working
Skin-tone bras fade and gray with washing, and a faded bra shows more than a new one. Wash them separately from darks, in a mesh bag, and replace them when the color drifts. The bra washing guide covers the details.
