How to Wash Bras by Hand or Machine, and How to Store Them

To wash a bra, hand wash it in cool water with a little mild detergent, or machine wash it fastened inside a mesh bag on a cool, delicate cycle. Press out water gently, reshape the cups and air dry. Never tumble dry, because heat damages the elastic that gives the band its support.

Why washing method matters

A bra’s support comes mostly from the elastic in the band. Heat, harsh agitation and strong detergents break that elastic down faster. A bra washed gently keeps its fit for longer, and a bra that keeps its fit keeps doing its job.

How to hand wash a bra

Hand washing is the gentlest method and takes about ten minutes.

  1. Fill a basin or sink with cool or lukewarm water.
  2. Add a small amount of mild detergent, about a teaspoon. A detergent made for delicates is ideal.
  3. Fasten the hooks so they cannot snag the fabric.
  4. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Swish the bra gently through the water. Rub any marks lightly with your fingers, especially inside the band.
  5. Rinse in clean cool water until no suds remain.
  6. Press out water. Squeeze gently or press the bra between two towels. Don’t wring or twist it, because that bends wires and stretches elastic.
  7. Reshape the cups with your hands while the bra is damp.
  8. Air dry. Lay it flat on a towel, or hang it from the center gore. Hanging by a strap can stretch it when it is wet.

Keep bras out of direct sun and away from radiators while they dry.

How to machine wash a bra

The machine is fine for most everyday bras if you protect them.

  • Fasten the hooks every time. Open hooks catch on other clothes and pull threads.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag. One bra per bag is best, or two at most. Molded cups keep their shape better on their own.
  • Choose a delicate or hand-wash cycle with cool water and a low spin.
  • Wash with similar items. Keep bras away from jeans, towels and anything with zips.
  • Skip fabric softener. It can coat elastic and technical fabrics.
  • Take bras out straight away, reshape the cups and air dry.

Never tumble dry

The dryer is the fastest way to shorten a bra’s life. Heat breaks down the elastic in the band and straps, so the band loosens and stops supporting. Heat can also warp molded foam cups and bend underwires out of shape.

Air drying takes longer but keeps the fit. Most bras dry overnight.

How often to wash bras

A few simple rules:

  • Everyday bras: after two or three wears is a common guideline. Skin oils, sweat and lotion build up in the fabric and wear out elastic over time.
  • Sports bras: after each workout. Sweat sits in the fabric and can cause odor.
  • Any bra: sooner if it feels damp, smells, or has visible marks.
  • Bralettes and sleep bras: treat them like everyday bras.

Giving a bra a day off between wears also helps. Elastic recovers its stretch when it rests, which is one reason to own more than one bra you wear often.

How to store bras

Good storage stops cups from denting and straps from stretching.

  • Nest molded bras. Lay them flat in a drawer, one inside the next, with the cups facing the same way. Tuck straps and bands inside the cups.
  • Don’t fold molded cups inside out. Pushing one cup into the other creases the foam, and the dent may never fully go.
  • Fold soft bras. Unlined bras, bralettes and sports bras can be folded in half or rolled.
  • Don’t hang bras by the straps for long periods. The weight slowly stretches them.
  • Give fragile bras space. Lace and special-occasion bras keep better without other things pressed on them.

When you travel, nest molded bras together and fill the cups with socks or underwear so they hold their shape in the case.

Care and fit go together

A bra that is washed well can still stop fitting, because bodies change and elastic ages. The reverse is true too: a bra in the wrong size wears out sooner, because a band that is too loose and cups that are too small put strain on the wires and elastic every time it is worn. If a well-cared-for bra starts riding up, check the fit with the 4-point fit check before you blame the washing. Questions

Can you put bras in the washing machine?

Most everyday bras can go in the machine if you fasten the hooks, put each bra in a mesh laundry bag and use a cool, delicate cycle. Hand washing is gentler and is the safer choice for lace, silk and special-occasion bras.

How often should you wash your bra?

A common rule is after every two to three wears for everyday bras. Wash sports bras after each workout, and wash any bra sooner if it feels damp or smells.

Can you put a bra in the dryer?

It is best not to. Dryer heat breaks down the elastic in the band and straps, and it can warp molded cups and underwires. Air dry instead.

How do you store bras so they keep their shape?

Lay molded bras flat and nest them one inside the next, cups facing the same way. Never fold one cup inside the other. Soft bras and bralettes can be folded in half or rolled.

What water temperature should I wash bras in?

Cool or lukewarm water. Hot water weakens elastic and can fade colors. Always check the care label first.
