What Bra to Wear With Off-the-Shoulder and One-Shoulder Tops

With an off-the-shoulder top, wear a strapless bra with a firm band, side support and silicone grip, or adhesive cups if the top is light and fitted. With a one-shoulder top, take the strap off a convertible bra on the bare side and keep the other strap under the covered shoulder.

Off-the-shoulder tops (also called Bardot tops) and one-shoulder tops both show the shoulders, but they need different bras. An off-the-shoulder top hides no strap at all; a one-shoulder top still covers one shoulder, and that one strap is worth keeping.

Off-the-shoulder tops

A strapless bra is the default, especially for a fuller bust, a long day or dancing. Look for:

  • a firm band that sits level all the way round;
  • boning or a firm panel at the sides;
  • silicone grip along the top and bottom edges;
  • a longline cut if you are DD or above.

Adhesive cups suit light, fitted tops, open backs, smaller to medium busts and shorter wear. They leave no line at the back, but give less lift than a strapless bra.

A strapless bralette or bandeau works under loose, casual tops and smaller busts, where comfort matters more than lift.

One-shoulder tops

  • A convertible bra is the easiest answer. Detach the strap on the bare side and keep the strap under the covered shoulder. One strap still takes some weight, so it is more supportive than strapless.
  • Some convertible bras let you move a strap diagonally, from the covered shoulder to the opposite side of the band. That angle can match an asymmetric neckline better.
  • A strapless bra or adhesive cups both work too, if no strap at all suits the top better.

Avoid bras with fixed straps: the bare-side strap will show.

Getting the strapless size right

A strapless bra is held up by the band alone, so the band needs to be firmer than in an everyday bra. Many people wear their sister size: one band down, one cup up. A 34C everyday becomes a 32D strapless. The cup holds the same volume; only the band is tighter.

Check it before the event: lift your arms, twist, sit down and lean forward. If the band slides down or the top edge pulls away from the body, go down another band. The strapless bra guide has a size picker and more fit checks.

What shows and what doesn’t

  • Off-the-shoulder necklines sit low at the front of the arms. A bra with a wide neckline can show at the sides, so a straight-across or sweetheart strapless bra hides best.
  • Light fabric shows lace and seams. Choose smooth cups in your skin tone; see what bra to wear under a white shirt.
  • Clear straps reflect light and show in photos. Leave them in the drawer.

Questions

How do I stop a strapless bra slipping under an off-the-shoulder top?

Go down a band size and up a cup (the sister size) so the band is firmer, and look for silicone along the top and bottom edges and boning at the sides. A slipping strapless bra almost always has a band that is too loose.

Can I wear a bra with one strap?

Yes. A convertible bra with detachable straps can be worn with a single strap over the covered shoulder. It gives more support than going strapless because one shoulder still carries some weight.

What about a bralette under an off-the-shoulder top?

A bandeau or strapless bralette works with loose tops and smaller busts. Most bralettes have fixed straps, so only use one if the straps are part of the look.

What if I have a large bust?

A longline strapless bra, which extends down the ribcage, holds better than a short band. For one-shoulder tops, a convertible bra with a wide band is the most supportive option.
