Why strapless sizing is different
In an everyday bra, the straps carry a small share of the weight and stop the band from sliding. In a strapless bra, that help is gone. The band does 100% of the work, so it has to grip your ribcage firmly enough to hold itself, and the cups, in place all day.
That is why a strapless bra in your usual size can feel fine in the fitting room and slip by the end of the evening. Your everyday band may be just firm enough with straps, but not without them.
The fix most fitters suggest is the sister size with a smaller band.
The strapless sizing rule: one band down, one cup up
Going down one band size and up one cup letter keeps the same cup volume but makes the band tighter. This pair of sizes is called a sister size. You get a firmer anchor without squashing the cups.
The rule is a starting point, not a must. If your current band already feels firm on the loosest hook, your usual size may be right for strapless too. Try both.
Sister-size table for strapless bras
Find your everyday size on the left. The middle column is the size to try first in a strapless bra. US and UK cup letters match up to DD, then differ, so both are shown.
| Usual size (US) | Try for strapless (US) | Same in UK |
|---|---|---|
| 32B | 30C | 30C |
| 34B | 32C | 32C |
| 34C | 32D | 32D |
| 36C | 34D | 34D |
| 34D | 32DD | 32DD |
| 36D | 34DD | 34DD |
| 38D | 36DD | 36DD |
| 34DD | 32DDD | 32E |
| 36DD | 34DDD | 34E |
| 38DD | 36DDD | 36E |
| 36DDD | 34G | 34F |
| 40D | 38DD | 38DD |
Each pair holds the same cup volume. Only the band changes. For any size not in the table, the sister size calculator shows the full ladder.

Fit checks for a strapless bra
Use the usual 4-point fit check, then add these strapless checks.
The band
- It sits level and low all the way round, with no dip at the back.
- It feels firm on the loosest hook. Snug is correct here.
- It stays put when you raise both arms over your head, twist, and sit down.
- You can still breathe comfortably and slide one or two fingers under it.
If it slides down when you raise your arms, try the next band down with one cup letter up.
The cups
- The top edge lies flat against your chest, with no gap and no spill.
- The wire, if there is one, sits on your ribcage around the breast, not on breast tissue.
- The center sits close to your breastbone.
Strapless cups often have a wider wire that wraps further round the side. That is normal and helps the bra stay up.
Silicone grip
Many strapless bras have silicone strips inside the top and bottom edges. These add friction against your skin so the band holds better. Look for grip along both edges if you wear a fuller cup. Grip helps a band that fits; it will not save a band that is too loose.
Skin that is damp from lotion or warm weather reduces grip, so apply lotion well ahead of time.
Longline strapless for fuller busts
A longline strapless bra has a deeper band that runs further down the torso, sometimes to the waist. The extra height spreads the weight over more of your ribcage, which helps a lot from DD cups and up.
A longline also gives a smoother line under a fitted bodice. Size it the same way: start with the sister size one band down, then check that the lower edge does not roll when you sit.
When to choose a bustier or built-in support
A strapless bra is not always the best answer. Consider a bustier, or support inside the dress, when:
- your cup is a G or larger in US sizing and strapless bras always slip;
- the dress is very fitted through the waist, so a bra line would show;
- the dress is also low in the back, which rules out a full band (see the backless dress guide);
- you will be dancing or on your feet for many hours.
A bustier is a strapless top with boning and a longer body, often down to the waist. Size it by band and cup where the brand allows, and by your bust and waist measurements where it uses clothing sizes.
Many formal and bridal dresses have cups and boning sewn in. A tailor can often add cups to a dress that has none. If the dress carries the support, you may need no separate bra at all.
Before the day
Wear the strapless bra for an hour at home in the dress, or something similar. Move around, sit, and lift your arms. If you are not sure of your starting size, measure yourself first and use the sister-size table above from that result.
