Is 34C Big? How to Tell if a Bra Size Is Big

A 34C is a modest size: it holds two cup steps less than the often-quoted US average of 34DD. Whether a size is big depends on the band and the cup together. A 36D holds the same cup volume as a 34DD, and a 32DD holds the same as a 34D.

Cup volume against the average

−2 steps

Your 34C holds about 2 cup steps less than the often-quoted US average of 34DD. One step is about one cup size on the same band.

On a 34 band, the average's cup volume is a 34DD.

The averages are retailer and survey figures, not measurements of real bodies. The size that fits you is the one that matters.

“Is my size big?” comes up for almost every size: is 34C big, is 36D big, is 32DD big. The short answer is that the letter alone can’t tell you. The longer answer takes about a minute.

Big compared to what?

A cup letter counts inches between bust and band. It is not a fixed volume. The same letter holds more on a bigger band: a 38C holds about what a 34DD holds. So “is it big” only has an answer when you compare cup volume on the same band.

The tool above does that. Enter any size and it shows where it sits against the often-quoted average, 34DD in the US or 36DD in the UK.

Each “cup step” is about one cup size on the same band. Sizes with the same entry in the middle column hold the same cup volume; they are sister sizes.

Why so many people think their size is big

  • Old measuring habits. Adding 4 inches to the band pushed many people into looser bands and smaller cups. A D or DD then sounded large. See why “D is big” is a myth.
  • Letters past D sound extreme. A 32DD is a smaller volume than a 36D, yet the double letter makes it sound bigger.
  • Frame changes the look. On a narrow frame, the same volume projects more and can look bigger than on a broad one.

Is the average the right yardstick?

The averages are retailer and survey figures, not measurements of real bodies, and many people wear the wrong size. They are useful for answering “is this unusual?” and not much else. The size that matters is the one that passes the fit check.

Is 36D big?

It is about average. A 36D holds the same cup volume as a 34DD, the often-quoted US average.
